Skin-care Necessities for Travelers
Keeping up a skin care routine isn’t always easy while traveling. Transferring my favorite cleanser, moisturizer and skin care products into 3 oz or smaller containers is messy and wasteful, but full containers can’t go in carry-on and take up precious space even if I check a bag through.
So I love it when I find a high quality product that comes in a convenient travel size, especially if it is made further travel-friendly with easy pumps and caps that prevent leaking and spills. Mikel Kristi scores on all counts with the Purifying Botanical Wash and C-Radiance Moisturizer.
The plant-based Purifying Botanical Wash is formulated using aloe, olive oil, lemon, eucalyptus, thyme and glycerin among others, and a dime-sized spot on moistened skin massages into a creamy cleansing foam. The pump top is protected by a cap that clicks into place to hold firmly, but if it should come off in luggage, a little plastic clip protects the pump from being pressed accidentally.
The tiniest spot of C-Radiance Moisturizer on a fingertip smooths in a silky film with a fresh citrus scent, and is absorbed into my skin immediately. The top of the ingenious pump container twists and the pump pops up. Another twist clicks it into place for one-finger pumping; the slightest push releases a dot of lotion. A firmer press releases a larger dot that’s enough for one entire side of my face.
Both containers are within the 3-ounce limit but hold more than enough to last through several long trips. I love the double security that keeps the contents safely inside until you need them.
I’ve long been a fan of the cleverly named Green Goo products, especially the 100% Natural Lavender & Thyme deodorant and the little tins of their Skin Repair. The deodorant lasts forever and doesn’t harden or smell wonky even after it was accidentally left in a piece of luggage that wasn’t used for a year. I buy it in three-packs so I can keep one in my day pack and one on my nightstand at home.
When I’m on the road, I like the handy Green Goo Everyday Travel Pack, with a tin each of the Skin Repair and heavenly fragranced Dry Skin Care with calendula flowers. Packages in a sturdy little clear plastic zip bag, the kit also contains first aid cream and lip balms in citrus and mint.
Handy cleaning and care products are available in small or single-use packets to carry in a purse or day pack – or even a pocket. Savvy Travelers’ small single-use packets include KleanUpz for hand washing and sanitizing, KleanOffz for wiping off tables and other surfaces, NoSweatz for deodorant pick-up, LiftOffz for nail polish removal, BottomzUp for personal hygiene and TakeOffz for makeup removal. These no-rinse cleaners all work well, but we found TakeOffz not so good for eye makeup because it stings. They are biodegradable and compostable, in small flat packets that are easy to slip into a pocket or handbag.
Miists offers a different solution to carrying health and beauty products, with a line of ingenious ultra-thin spray containers about the size of a credit card and about ¼-inch thick. Each is good for at least 150 sprays and they last for years. Because you re-use the container, there are no bits to throw away, and they fit easily in a pocket or handbag. The alcohol-free hand sanitizer gets the most use, but mists also makes stain remover, breath freshener, hairspray, bite & burn relief, lens cleaner and SPF50 sunscreen in the same handy spray containers.
My all-time go-to sunscreen for my face is Amarte. It’s SPF50, non-greasy and so light I don’t even notice it on my face (except that my skin feels soft and moisturized) and it’s water resistant. It is the best I have ever used, and I even like the bottle, TSA-compliant and in a thin flat shape that fits easily in a pocket.
They aren't for skin care, but final thing in my ready-to-go health and beauty collection is a bag of New Zealand Manuka Honey Nuggets. I like to keep a handful of these individually wrapped organic drops in my travel pack to sooth a scratchy throat and combat the dry air in airplanes. And the honey gives me a quick energy boost, always a plus when I’m traveling.
